Welcome to Chuck’s World, a concept born January 12, 2012, simply because I finally had the time in life to develop and practice my writing.
My childhood was a “by-the-book” example, being raised in a small town in western Nebraska, attending a catholic school (St. Agnes Academy) for 12 years, and then moving directly to the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1977 with a degree in Broadcast/Advertising Journalism.
The first 20 years of my “professional life” entailed a wide variety of positions in the Media, and some of you may still remember me from my 6 years as a host on various shopping shows, most notably Home Shopping Network.
Through a variety of contacts and friendships made during a stop at a small TV station in Laughlin, NV, I executed a career-change to the gaming industry in 1996, going to work at Harrah’s Laughlin as “Creative Coordinator,” which meant I was the second-in-command for their in-house advertising department. The next year, thanks to the vision of a Director of Marketing who preferred to hire people who don’t come from a gaming background, I acquired my first position outside of my journalism field as an Executive Host. The is the best description of my profession now, as I have continued on the fringe of the industry as an “Independent Casino Host” for, ironically, Caesar’s Entertainment (nee Harrah’s Entertainment), booking my long-time customers into a wide array of Caesar’s properties in Nevada.
That brings us full-circle to my Blog, Chuck’s World. As an Independent Host, I have no hours, work out of my home, and never have to be at the casino unless I have a guest arriving. Therefore, what better time in my life to scratch my writing itch!
So, what is Chuck’s World? Good question, and a question with an answer that will probably emerge in the coming weeks and months and years. During my consultation on this project with my dear friend and veteran blogger, Jo Myers I found myself befuddled when I attempted to tell her why I wanted to start a blog. Finally, I told her, “I gotta write!” After some 15 years away from doing anything remotely associated with my Journalism background, I have to have an outlet for my creative steam. Therefore, Chuck’s World. Jo’s blog is a wonderful chronicle of her journey through breast cancer, and I have another friend Cathy who does a blog on cooking. Chuck’s World is more like Seinfeld–it’s about nothing in particular. It’s about my experience and the thoughts and philosophies I have developed in my 50-plus years of life. It’s “End of the Day” stuff. Stuff I might think about as I sit down to write in my journal before “lights out,” or ideas that rattle around in my head when I turn off my Ipod and sattelite radio on a long drive in my car.
My aim is not to change the world, but rather to change and transform myself, and in doing so, make the world a tiny bit better from my little corner of it.
Many thanks to Jo for the advice and encouragement, and to Cathy, Henry, Tammy and Donna who all pointed me in the right direction, via Facebook.
For those of you wondering, the picture on the front page of Chuck’s World was taken by me at a cabin in Mammoth Creek, UT during a “Bro-Trip”, something I will chronicle in subsequent editions.
